 Link Pyramid or Link Wheel – Which Link building Technique is better ?

Let’s start to define both:

Link Pyramid is a form of a link wheel where the web properties link to in a form of a pyramid. In other words, the link goes from site A to site B to site C to site D respectively without closing the or a ‘loop’

Link Wheel(s) it is a set of web properties interlinked to each other and eventually they close the loop (thus the circular form or wheel shape)

In my humble opinion, a link pyramid has a more powerful effect for ranking keywords.

Link pyramid:

has the power to get a powerful high PR backlink by building the PR of the properties under the link pyramid. Keep in mind you need to publish quality content on all properties to avoid account deletion.

Are Link Wheels Ineffective ?

I don’t think so. For me, they serve a different purpose. I mainly use them to build up authority to my site rather than focusing on a Keyword.

It is a good practice to create a link wheel on a new site. When you do this offer good content not spammy and no affiliate links. However, with a link pyramid you need to focus on the anchor text. The goal is to create a powerful backlink so use the anchor text. I have presented the basic versions of a pyramid and a wheel. However, experienced SEO people used variations to reduce footprint. You need to check your Keyword competition and decide the structure of the pyramid. This is something that I will explain in detail later on – keep an eye on your inbox.

This post is just to give you a general idea of what is the difference between both link strategies. In another post I will detail how I build the link pyramid.

FYI, there is a ‘new’ term tossed about link wheels. They call it social wheels. Do I play with them, you bet I do and in 2012 I do more social wheels than traditional backlinking. Do I stop building regular links. Not really… I just pick my fights. I rather spend a few minutes trying to get quality links vs quantity [ pick between spinning an article or creating a guest post ] Nevertheless, I still build link pyramids to my ‘important’ posts.
